How did the piano get its name? The answer to this question highlights a vital and greatly misunderstood piano part that can make or break your music playing!

The piano was the amazing invention of Bartolemeo Cristofori over three hundred years ago. The original name of Cristofori’s groundbreaking invention was the ‘Pianoforte’ meaning ’soft-loud’.

The forerunners of the piano in Cristofori’s time had major shortcomings:

– The harpsichord had strings that were plucked (unlike the strings of today’s pianos that are struck by little hammers). It was able to produce a reasonable volume of sound but it lacked expressiveness. The loudness of the notes was always the same no matter how hard the keys on the keyboard were played. So the music of

the harpsichord ‘lacked soul’.

I am not sure if anyone has been watching out there, about the types of music that we are listening to. Let us look at them for a minute. Our grandparents listen to music like; “Happy Days are Here Again, the Skies Above Are Clear Again.” Kids today listen to RAP, which actually starts with a ‘C’ except the ‘C’ is silent in this new spelling and pronunciation. Its really, CRAP. A radio station in TX is actually called K-RAP. Perfect.

It is not that the music is so bad; actually it is good, because its rhythm and cadence puts people in a convergence state of mind. In other words it puts them into theta state of mind and that is

where it is easier to suggest a new thought or to brainwash in sleep state. The initiation of such brainwaves is powerful indeed. These tactics are also used in certain churches and Sales and motivational seminars. Also during commercials and government uses them to some degree for important endeavors, for instance cadence in military marching. The gangster rap is not good in that it suggests killing, drugs, other gang activities while putting its listener into the convergence state of mind. This is a negative thing, and may cause these individuals to dwell on certain thoughts and give them ideas that they may with proper gang mentality attempt one or more of the activities talked about in the songs. It would be much better to have songs with that type of cadence, which promoted good deeds and love. Perhaps there are many of these types of songs yet they do not sell very well and I do not here positive rap songs as much as I should. Mostly the Gangster Rap.

Children who are home schooled love school scrapbooks equally as much as children who attend public school and private school.

There are really only two ways you can play chords on the piano - solid or broken. While solid chords are nice, it’s the arpeggio or broken chord that students love to play! Cascading notes shimmer and glide up and down the piano keyboard to create a waterfall of sound!

Creating a broken chord piano improvisation need not be difficult. All that you need to know is what chords to play and how to create the broken chord sound. Knowing the chords you will play is the easy part. Creating the broken chord sound can present some with problems. These problems can be easily overcome if we start out by using a special chord structure known as the open position chord.
